Description
This historical coin was first minted as the result of the California Gold Rush in 1850, the iconic Double Eagle design has become a must have for any collector. As the Treasury began to receive gold, Congress passed legislation to create the Double Eagle coin in 1849. The engraver James Barton Longacre created the design that eventually became the largest circulating gold coin in the United States.
Each $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle (MS65) showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast. The shield consists of a ring of thirteen stars this signify the original 13 Colonies. The design was also modeled after the nations Great Seal. The obverse side of the Gold Double Eagle contains a Lady Liberty design influenced by a Greco-Roman sculpture. She wears a pearl-encrusted coronet inscribed with “Liberty”. These revered coins have been minted with .9675 oz of gold.
