Buy U.S. Silver Coins Online
Official U.S. Silver Coins have a rich history, and are often held in high regard by historians and collectors. For collectors and investors, it’s important to understand the history of the metal content in these coins. U.S. Silver Coins before 1965 featured 90% silver, while Half Dollar coins from 1965-1969 were made of 40% silver. By 1970, silver was removed from coins. This will be explained further below.

U.S. Silver Coins Pre-1965
Prior to 1965, American Silver Coins were made of 90% silver (and 10% copper). This includes all United States quarters, dimes, half dollars, and silver dollars dated 1964 or earlier. In non-bullion silver coins, these are the most valuable coins due to the higher silver content.
U.S. Silver Coins 1965-1969
Dimes and standard quarters released in 1965 or later include no real silver, and are instead copper-nickel clad coins.
The notable U.S. silver coin in this era is the Half Dollar, which includes 40% silver. By 1971, these coins also become copper-nickel clad coins.
90% U.S. Silver Coins
Before ending the 90% silver coins in 1965 due to the rising cost of silver, there was a wide variety of coins produced. Perhaps the most sought after of these coins in the Kennedy Half Dollar, which started production in 1964. This meant that there was just 1 year’s worth of these coins produced with 90% silver.
Other popular 90% U.S. Silver Coins include the following:
- Barber Dimes/Quarters
- Franklin Half Dollars
- Mercury Dimes
- Morgan Dollars
- Walking Liberty Half Dollars
- Washington Quarters
