The First Gold Coin: The Gold Krugerrand
In 1967, the Krugerrand was released in South Africa. Beginning as a 1 ounce, 22-karat coin, the Krugerrand was released in order to showcase South Africa’s vast gold and gem reserves.
The coin was released at an interesting time in South African history, as the apartheid had a strong hold on the country. Despite the coin being incredibly popular throughout the world, Western investors were unable to publicly purchase the gold Krugerrand for several years due to economic sanctions.
Even with strict economic sanctions put in place to weaken the apartheid system, many investors and collectors were able to get hold of gold Krugerrand coins. While today’s bullion options are vast, the Krugerrand was the only pure gold coin available until 1979, when the Canadian Maple Leaf (and soon many others) became available. At this time, Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the market.
In South Africa’s post-apartheid years, the coin has become less popular. This is because of competition from other countries, not reflective of any change in coin value. Coins continue to be produced with 22-karat gold content, and the only design change was a modernization. On the contrary, many people find these coins more impressive than the rest because of their great history.
Different Types of Gold Krugerrand
The original gold Krugerrand was a 1 ounce coin, but by 1980 South Africa released three new fractional-weight coins.
Limited edition proof Krugerrand coins are also in circulation. The primary difference between the bullion and proof coins are that proof coins contain 220 serrations, while the bullion have 160 serrations.
