Description

History of the Gold Nugget & Kangaroo Series
The Gold Nugget Coin series was first introduced in 1986 by Gold Corp., an entity owned by the Western Australian Government and coin issues had extremely limited mintages.  In 1990, the Australian Gold Nugget was changed to feature the kangaroo. While the obverse of this series bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II each year, the 1 oz and fractional Gold sizes feature a yearly changing design of Australia’s most recognizable animal. The 1 kilo Gold coin reverse remains consistent yearly with the iconic red kangaroo design.

The Perth Mint was established in 1899 originally as a branch of the British Royal Mint. It wasn’t until 1970 that ownership of the mint was turned over to Western Australia’s state government. Since then, the Perth Mint has been the source of many coin series popular among collectors and investors alike, including the Golden Kangaroo and Gold Nugget Coins, along with many popular series produced today.
