Description
Since 1986, the American Gold Eagle has been the flagship gold bullion coin of the United States Mint. Its reputation has grown since that time, making it the most widely traded gold coin in the world.
In terms of gold weight, the coin contains one-half troy ounce (0.5 troy oz) of pure gold. Its face value as legal tender is $25.
Unlike most world bullion coins, all Gold Eagles are .917 fine gold (22 karats). This makes them more durable and results in an attractive deep gold color. Each of these coins still has 1/2 troy oz of pure gold by weight.
The obverse design uses an updated version of the classic Saint-Gaudens double eagle motif. Lady Liberty triumphantly stands atop a hill holding an olive branch in one hand and lit torch in the other. The U.S. Capitol building is visible in the distance as radiant light emerges from the horizon. Fifty stars line the outer rim. The date is placed to the right of Miss Liberty and “LIBERTY” is inscribed at the top rim. The coin’s edge design is reeded.
A family of bald eagles appears on the reverse. This original design is the work of artist Miley Busiek. The father eagle returns to the family nest carrying an olive branch. Two baby eaglets are cradled in the mother eagle’s wing. The mottoes “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are inscribed to the left and right, respectively. The issuing country “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” runs across the top rim in bold lettering. At the bottom rim, the weight and denomination are found, reading “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD~25 DOLLARS.”
