The purity, of the Proof American Gold Eagle, is 91.67% gold but contains a 1/2 troy ounce of pure gold. The additional metals in the coins are copper and silver creating a purity of 22 karat. This additional metal is added to keep the coin from scratching as gold is actually a softer metal and can scratch easily in it’s pure state. The coin weighs actually more than a 1/2 ounce and contains 22 karats.
