Alongside the famed 1 ounce gold Maple Leaf, the Royal Canadian Mint offered its first edition of the Maple Leaf Series in November 1982. It introduced the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins to join the 1 oz gold coin, and boosted the purity of the gold in the coins from .999 to .9999. In later years, growing popularity demanded even more additions to the series. In 1986, the mint added the 1/2 oz gold coin to the collection. In 1993, the mint added a 1/20 oz coin to the series. The next permanent addition to the series was the 1 Gram coin added in 2014, while a 1/15th oz was also released as a special edition.
In 2024, the obverse of the Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins proudly presents the inaugural bust of His Majesty King Charles III. Reflecting the tradition of British coinage, the King is depicted without a crown and faces left.
The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins features the popular sugar maple leaf. Designed by Walter Ott in 1979, this image remains unchanged to this day and is also used on the Silver Maple Leaf, Platinum Maple Leaf, and Palladium Maple Leaf.
As of 2014, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins have two security features to combat counterfeiting. Radial lines are used in the background field of both the obverse and reverse sides of the coin. The reverse also includes a micro-engraved maple leaf privy with 2024 inscribed in the center.
