The 1/20 oz Gold Maple Leaf was the fourth fractional-ounce coin introduced in the series. The 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins were introduced in November 1982, followed by the 1/2 oz coin in 1986. After the 1993 addition of the 1/20 oz Gold Maple Leaf, only one more coin permanently joined the collection. The 1 Gram coin was introduced in 2014.
On the obverse side of 2021 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins, Queen Elizabeth II is featured in right-profile relief. This fourth-generation portrait shows the Queen at the age of 79 and is the first during her reign to depict the monarch without a crown. The last time this happened was during the 1930s and the reign of her father, King George VI.
The reverse face of 2021 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins bears the sugar maple leaf. This is the design originally created by Walter Ott for this series when it debuted in 1979. The sugar maple is one of many maple species in North America and its leaf has long been a symbol of Canadian provinces and territories dating back to the 17th century.
All 2021 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins feature radial lines in the background fields as a security measure against counterfeiting. Additionally, the reverse field has a micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark that includes the last two digits of the date mark, 20, as another security feature.
