The 1 ounce Silver Libertad was first introduced by the Mexican Mint in 1982, and have been produced every year since then. The design of the coin was updated in 1996 as well as 2000, but the same primary design elements remain.
Before 1996, coins will include a different depiction of the “Angel of Victory,” and coins after 2000 also include the historical Coat of Arms for Mexico. Every year, the reverse of the Libertad depicts two storied volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, along with a Winged Guardian Angel. Despite being guaranteed by the Bank of Mexico, it doesn’t have an official face value due to its limited mintage.
The Libertad is known for having a much more limited stock than other gold and silver bullion, and the multiple design changes over the years have made some mintages relatively rare. Along with the storied history of the nearly 500-year old Mexican Mint, the Libertad is always a favorite of investors.
